Cumberland, Indiana

Community Profile

The Town of Cumberland is an active community located partially within both Marion and Hancock Counties on the Historic National Road between I-70 and I-74. It was established in 1831 and development over the years has been largely related to advances in transportation. Cumberland manages to provide all the conveniences associated with being adjacent to Indianapolis, while still retaining its small-town charm. The Town of Cumberland and the City of Indianapolis have established an historic conservation district protecting much of the historical core of the community. Prior to the local designation, the district received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places. The Town is very proud of its Historic National Road heritage and has adopted an overlay district to guide development along the Historic National Road. Additionally, a streetscape project was completed in 2010 along US 40 in tandem with the improvements to Washington Street to further promote the community's Historic National Road heritage.
