Community Profile

Community Profile

Cumberland is an active community located partially within both Marion and Hancock Counties on the Historic National Road between I-70 and I-74. Cumberland was established in 1831. Cumberland's development over the years has been largely related to the advances in transportation. Cumberland has a thriving business community and has retained its small town charm, while providing the conveniences of being located adjacent to Indianapolis. The Town of Cumberland and City of Indianapolis have established an historic conservation district protecting much of the historical core of the community. Prior to the local designation, the district received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places. The Town is very proud of its Historic National Road heritage and has adopted an overlay district to guide development along the Historic National Road. Additionally, a streetscape project began in 2009 along US 40 in tandem with the improvements to Washington Street to further promote the community's Historic National Road heritage.
