Snow & Ice Removal

The Town of Cumberland's Department of Public Works is responsible for snow and ice control on town streets during the winter season. Our goal is to ensure all town-owned roads are as safe and accessible as possible during and after winter storms.

The department has a priority list for snow removal:

  1. Primary Routes: Main roads that facilitate traffic through the town. These will be cleared edge-to-edge as quickly as possible.
  2. Secondary Routes: Initially, a double pathway is cleared for emergency vehicles. Then, these streets will be cleared from curb to curb.
  3. Cul-de-Sacs and Courts: These are addressed after primary and secondary routes are cleared.

When an impending storm is detected, operations vary depending on the expected snowfall. Salting operations occur when snow or ice accumulates to 1 inch or less, while plowing operations occur for more significant accumulations. Plowing operations range from one truck to five trucks, with additional backhoes and outside contractors as needed.

Please note that during snow removal, some snow will be plowed into driveways. The town will not be responsible for re-plowing if residents shovel or blow snow into cleared streets. We recommend exercising extra caution when driving or walking during winter weather conditions.

For further questions or to report hazardous conditions, please contact the Department of Public Works.

Curbside Leaf Pickup

he Town of Cumberland provides curbside leaf pick-up throughout the Town. This service makes it more convenient for residents to dispose of leaves in an environmentally friendly manner.  All collected leaves are mulched and will be available for use by residents as compost next summer.

Things to know:

  • Leaves Only - Please ensure no limbs, brush, rocks, or other debris are mixed in with your leaves so the Town's leaf vac is not damaged.  If such material is present, the Town will not pick up your leaves.
  • Rake to the edge of the road - Leaves should be raked into a long, narrow pile at the edge of the road (not in the side ditch or in the road) so that our leaf vac can reach them.  Leaves that cannot be reached will not be picked up.
  • No leaves in the street - Under the Federal Clean Water Act you are prohibited from raking leaves into the street where they impact the Storm Sewer System.  If leaves are raked into the street you may be subject to penalties, including a fine. The Town is responsible for enforcement of this provision.  This is why leaves in front of your property  cannot be picked up until they are removed from the street.
  • Disruptions in schedule - In the event of inclement weather, equipment breakdown, or other situations beyond our control, leaf pick-up will remain on schedule.  As time allows, we will attempt to go back and service those areas that were missed on regularly scheduled days
