Redevelopment Commission

Redevelopment Commission

The Cumberland Redevelopment Commission was formed to facilitate economic and redevelopment within the Town of Cumberland. Under Indiana Code 36-7-14 the Redevelopment Commission's purpose is to "investigate, study, and survey areas needing redevelopment within the corporate limits." The Redevelopment Commission, further, is designed to promote land use in the best interest of the Town.  The Commission can acquire land, clear property for redevelopment purposes, construct public infrastructure or facilities, repair structures, remediate environmental contamination, and other similar tasks.

Over the course of the last few years, the Redevelopment Commission has spearheaded the Carroll Road and Pennsy Trail Reuse Plan and an investigation to establish a tax increment financing (TIF) district.  The Carroll Road and Pennsy Trail Reuse Plan establishes a vision for the redevelopment of the corridor adjacent to the Pennsy Trail.  The Plan identifies the restoration of the old wooden pavilion on Warehouse Road ("Pavilion") for a trailhead and multi-use activity area.  The plan also discusses how the corridor should transition from the Historic Conservation District on the Marion County side to new development on the Hancock County side.  The Historic National Road Redevelopment Plan and Economic Development Strategy identifies an area along E. Washington Street to be established as Redevelopment Area under IC 36-7-1-3.

The Commission's current priorities include designs for restoring the Pavilion and completing an analysis of the market including a survey of current business owners.

The Redevelopment Commission is a five (5) member board. Commission members are appointed to one-year terms. The Redevelopment Commission currently meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Town Hall.
