The Town of Cumberland has completed and is working to complete initiatives that will have a significant impact on the Town.
Pennsy Trail & Carroll Road Corridor Development
In 2011, a study was conducted to analyze the use of land and plan for future development around Carroll Road and the Pennsy Trail on the eastern edge of Cumberland. This plan calls for an extension of the Historic National Road community theme to include a walker and biker friendly area that also promotes development consistent with the Town's goals, historic nature, and plan. The current lumber pavilion next to the Pennsy Trail is included in the study, and plans call to rehabilitate the structure into a community space, as seen here in renderings. This project entails a trail to follow a 3 mile stretch along Buck Creek from the existing Pennsy Trail to the 21st Street Trail. Funding from INDOT for this project is supposed to let in 2016, and construction is planned to take place from late 2016 through 2017. For more information, see our brochure and map.
This project was funded and constructed by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). The project included a landscaped median along East Washington Street, new sidewalks, street lights, signal poles, landscaping, and street trees. The Wayburn Pocket Park was also installed along this route in historic Cumberland.
Cumberland Pennsy Trail(Complete)
The Cumberland Pennsy Trail opened to the public in 2010. The three (3) mile stretch of trail follows the old Pennsylvania Railroad from German Church to Mt. Comfort Road. The trail was funded through Federal Stimulus funds and Transportation Enhancement (TEA) funds. A scale model of the Solar System is also part of the trail.
